Transforming Construction through Digital Excellence

Magdalena Pyszkowski, Global Head of Market Management, Knauf Insulation is a seasoned leader renowned for her expertise in team development and process improvement. Pyszkowski leads international market development at Knauf Insulation, emphasizing data-driven collaboration across the construction supply chain. She has developed a strong proficiency in digitalization and building information modeling (BIM) through collaborative efforts in cross-functional construction teams. She is also a co-author of the book, “BIM and data” and is also an active member of the buildingSMART Poland and the bSI Product Room steering committee.

In an interview with CIOApplications Europe, Pyszkowski shares her insights on the major challenges in the data annotation space and effective strategies to mitigate them.

Can you share your journey so far, highlighting the key milestones and experiences along the way?

With over two decades of experience, I served as a civil engineer in France. Committed to continuous learning, I earned a diploma in digital transformation and later transitioned to the manufacturing sector while maintaining my primary focus on construction. With extensive expertise in engineering, communication, innovation and manufacturing, I effectively combine civil engineering with digital transformation. In addition to my professional achievements, I serve as the President of the Wicci Poland Foundation, where I support women entrepreneurs through holistic professional development initiatives. I am deeply committed to advancing diversity and inclusion by working to eliminate barriers in professional environments.

What, according to you, are key digital technology trends creating future opportunities in construction and how are they improving information exchange?

It is primarily about how information is exchanged throughout the construction and design process. The construction industry is transforming from traditional methods, such as using printouts of spreadsheets, Microsoft Excel and codes, to digital information exchange, which must be reliable and standardized. This is a pressing need in both the construction and manufacturing industries. On the manufacturing side, the digital product passport, more like a digital template, is instrumental in delivering reliable product information throughout the design and construction process. This change will introduce new interoperability standards, allowing manufacturers and construction companies to interact directly and transform their business models. Today's technology, with advanced software and high standards, supports this information exchange, marking a significant evolution of industry practices.

What challenges do construction companies encounter when it comes to leveraging data or adapting to new technologies?

The evolving relationships between the construction and manufacturing sectors are creating uncertainties about data requirements and provision. This shift is fundamentally changing collaboration practices, as seen in the U.K., where request for information meets a certain standard.

Additionally, we face the challenge of global population growth, which is projected to reach 11.2 billion by 2100, which demands more buildings for living and working. Traditional construction, with its lengthy timelines, is inadequate, making prefabrication and automation essential. While once experimental, these methods are now mature, enabling rapid construction. However, this speed requires standardized information dissemination. We must address the growing demand, especially in continents outside Europe where the demand is already significant and our current readiness is insufficient.

Would you like to discuss anything specific regarding sustainability and energy efficiency in construction?

Energy efficiency is a fundamental aspect of their strategy, with a strong focus on developing solutions that enhance building performance. This is recognized as a significant challenge for the entire insulation industry. Our focus extends to developing solutions that minimize carbon emissions, aligning with the European Union's objectives under the Fit for 55 package, which aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions.

Can you share insights on the challenges women face as entrepreneurs in the construction industry?

From my experience, I understand there remains a noticeable gender gap in the construction industry. However, this is gradually changing, particularly in digital fields like BIM, where I've observed an increasing number of female professionals. No country has achieved gender equality at this level, prompting me to contribute individually.

I run a foundation dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs, particularly Polish women, with an international focus. We offer a free, nine-month program called the School of Giving Birth to Business, which provides mentorship and practical knowledge. Successful female entrepreneurs are featured, and we host a biennial Women's Summit; the next event is to be held in March 2025 in Sopot, Poland, to inspire and support women in business. The courses are offered on a voluntary basis by professors and trainers. We've witnessed successful examples of women starting their businesses through this program, and we continue to support, mentor and follow their progress. Additionally, I am part of my company's diversity, equity and inclusion initiative, working internally to foster a more inclusive work environment.

What advice would you offer as a final note to help your peers navigate the challenges and complexities of digital transformation in the sector more effectively?

There is an opportunity to advance the construction sector through the adoption of new technologies, such as digital twins and lean construction methods, to enhance material delivery and data exchange. We need to rethink the business model and how to collaborate between different stakeholders. We need to consider the manufacturing world as a part of the whole chain, not just design and construction companies. Manufacturers are supplying extensive information about their products, ensuring compliance with the construction industry's regulations in each country. The key is transforming collaboration by moving beyond just material costs to focus on improving construction and scalability through partnerships. Embracing a partner relationship over traditional supplier roles is essential and some companies are already piloting this approach with various stakeholders.
